Approaching test results

This section provides a basic framework for the interpretation of common tests performed as part of pre-operative assessment process.

This section provides guidance as to when specific actions are advised in the case of abnormal results. Results that fall outside of the normal range for the laboratory do not necessarily indicate that specific actions or referrals should take place.

Areas covered

  • Interpretation of Full Blood Count (FBC)
  • Interpretation of Urea & Electrolytes (U&Es)
  • Interpretation of HbA1c
  • When to seek consultant review of ECGs

Areas NOT covered in this section

Several advanced imaging modalities and functional tests of the cardiorespiratory system can be ordered by the POAC:

  • echocardiograms
  • pulmonary function tests (PFTs)
  • cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPEX)

Interpretation of the results of these tests should be conducted or reviewed by the consultant anaesthesiologist on duty.
