Pre-Operative chest X-rays

Chest X-rays are not indicated as part of a routine pre-operative workup. The only circumstances under which they should be ordered is when the following are suspected

• active pulmonary disease (e.g. active pneumonia, ongoing exacerbation of COPD)
• heart failure that is poorly controlled (i.e. breathlessness on lying flat, METS < 4)
